The "Search Redirect Virus" is a little-known but highly infectious virus that is continually installing itself onto Windows computers and then causing your search engine links to be redirected to fake websites. Although this virus is highly common (infecting people's computers from the likes of rogue downloads and malicious websites), it's actually extremely difficult to remove. To get rid of the virus, you need to be able to cure the files that it will change - which can be done by using the tutorial on this page.
What Is This Virus?
The search redirect infection is a lot different than other rogue viruses, in that it will just change the files / settings that your PC uses to run, making it extremely difficult to remove using standard antivirus programs. Not many people know this, but antivirus tools work by scanning your computer and then attempting to locate any of the files / settings which a virus has placed onto your PC. This normally works to get rid of most virus infections because they work by installing a file / setting onto your computer that will leave a footprint the antivirus application can identify & remove. The redirect virus does not place any files onto your PC - it will just change some of the settings that Windows uses to run, making it quite difficult to remove.
How To Remove This Infection
The way to get rid of the redirect virus is to get rid of the settings / options that the infection has changed or damaged. The virus you have will either come in the form of a "Trojan Horse" or a standard "browser hijack object", and will basically work by opening up onto your computer and then changing the processes which Windows uses to either browse the Internet or load the Internet settings.
The best way to get rid of this virus is to first use a "Trojan Horse Removal" tool - which will scan through your PC and get rid of any potential Trojan Horse infections that may be causing the redirects... and after that, use a special piece of software that's going to fix the infected files which could be infected by the virus.
